The International Mobilization for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui – Official Statement

On March 1, 2014, an international mobilization for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui will begin with special observances and activities throughout Pakistan (Aafia’s home country, and headquarters for the International Free Aafia Movement). Insha’Allah, in a few days I expect to be in Pakistan as part of a multi-nation tour to add my voice to the call for Dr. Siddiqui’s release and repatriation. Among the nations that we are expecting to visit are Malaysia and South Africa.

Aafia Siddiqui is a Pakistani national who came to the United States in 1990; she graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brandeis University with honors. Widely respected for her commitment to Islam and humanitarian relief work, Dr. Siddiqui became a person of suspicion after the tragedy of 9/11; a suspicion which ultimately resulted in Dr. Siddiqui and her three young children (two of whom are American Born citizens) becoming targets of a rendition operation (i.e. they were kidnapped and disappeared) not long after she returned home to Pakistan in 2002 – after 12 productive years in the United States. The exact date of their rendition was March 30, 2003.

After five years of secret imprisonment and torture (in a third country), Dr. Siddiqui was returned to America in 2008. She is currently imprisoned in a U.S. federal institution known as FMC Carswell (in Fort Worth, Texas) under conditions that violate the US Constitution’s guarantee against “cruel and unusual punishment.” The central purpose of the 2014 international mobilization is to expand awareness of her plight, and to demand Dr. Siddiqui’s immediate release and repatriation. Furthermore, until such time, we demand that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui receive the humane treatment that she is entitled to receive – under both U.S. and international law – even as an unjustly held prisoner of war.

With Dr. Siddiqui’s condition rapidly deteriorating, time is of the essence. She must be released soon or she will die soon…thousands of miles away from where she rightfully belongs.

In the struggle for peace thru justice,

El-Hajj Mauri’ Saalakhan
Director of Operations
